The Kansas Department of Revenue this morning announced the waiver of penalty and interest for the first quarter 2020 estimated tax payments due April 15, 2020, that are made by July 15.  Less than a week ago, The Sentinel reported that the State of Kansas expects estimated tax payments for the 1st quarter of 2020 to be paid on April 15, even though Missouri and other states extended the filing deadline to July 15.

Notice 20-02 says, “The Director of Taxation will waive any applicable penalty and interest for taxpayers whose first quarter 2020 estimated tax payments are made after April 15, 2020, but on or before July 15, 2020.”

This applies to individual income tax, corporate income tax, and privilege tax.

The notice from KDOR says the waiver is prompted by “events surrounding the novel coronavirus-19” but one must wonder if bad press from not extending the deadline as did other states was also a factor.
