According to a release from Croft, the Fellowship is a “highly selective, bipartisan leadership development program that brings together outstanding state and local elected officials from across the country.”

Each year, the Rodel Fellowship selects 12 Republican and 12 Democrat state and local elected officials to participate in a series of seminars focused on ethical leadership, democratic principles, and effective public service.

“I am honored to be selected for the Rodel Fellowship and grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside dedicated public servants from across the country,” Croft said in the release. “Good leadership requires a willingness to listen, learn, and engage with people who bring different perspectives to the table. Throughout my military service and my time in the Kansas Legislature, I’ve believed that meaningful progress comes from finding common ground and working together toward shared goals. I look forward to bringing those lessons and experiences back to Kansas.”

Over the course of two years, Fellows participate in three multi-day seminars led by distinguished scholars. Through discussions of foundational American texts, including the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and writings by Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr., participants examine the principles and responsibilities of effective leadership.

The Rodel Institute created the Rodel Fellowship in 2005.

Following completion of the Rodel Fellowship seminars, Fellows have an opportunity to gather periodically with alumni of the program to discuss critical questions of public policy and public leadership in a nonpartisan setting. Over 450 elected leaders have completed the program. These Fellows have gone on to serve as United States senators, governors, mayors, party leaders, Cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, and Vice President of the United States.

The Rodel Institute is a nonpartisan center for leadership and intellectual growth. Rodel helps America’s most promising leaders reach their full potential as public servants, deepen their commitment to democracy and the rule of law, and work together to address some of our nation’s most important domestic and international challenges.
