Tim Huelskamp moved from Kansas to helm Chicago-based think tank, the Heartland Institute a few months ago. Recently, the former Kansas Congressman penned a biting opinion piece about another politician from yesteryear, former Vice President Al Gore.
“Al Gore’s latest flick, ‘An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,’ is now being shown in movie theaters across America. Yes, I didn’t notice either. And the same goes for the millions of Americans who took in a movie this past weekend,” Huelskamp writes for the Washington Examiner.
Former Vice President Gore’s film is a sequel to “An Inconvenient Truth,” a 2006 film for which Gore was awarded the Nobel Prize. The sequel isn’t doing so well in theaters. Huelskamp called the latest film, “Gore’s sad grab at political relevancy.” It grossed less than $1 million in theaters last weekend.
“No word yet on whether Gore is going to demand a recount,” Huelskamp writes.
The column lists fallacies from Gore’s original foray into filmmaking, including alarmist predictions of rising sea levels, more catastrophic hurricanes and tornadoes, and arctic ice melting. None came to pass.
“Instead, Antarctic ice has increased, and Gore even bought a beachfront mansion to prove he didn’t believe it either,” Huelskamp slays.
The former Big First Congressman lost his re-election bid in the 2016 Republican primary. Known as a rigid, but bold, conservative, he was removed from the House Agriculture Committee for bucking Republican leadership. He was ultimately replaced by Congressman Roger Marshall.
It appears Huelskamp’s new role as Heartland Institute President hasn’t tamed him.
“More than 10 years ago, Americans forked over $50 million to listen to the former vice president claim to be a scientist…Will there be a rising sea of moviegoers rushing into watch the aging Al Gore preach this same sermon again?” Huelskamp concludes. “I doubt it. Who wants to spend $10 to be lied to a second time by someone whose first film only proved that he has no idea what he is talking about?”
