Lansing School Board member Kirsten Workman was among the panelists sharing ideas on raising student achievement at the annual conference of School Boards for Academic Excellence (SBAE), held this year in Charleston, South Carolina.

From its website, SBAE’s mission statement is:

…To restore academic excellence and parental rights in the American education system by building a national network of state-based organizations and school board members dedicated to reforming policies and practices that improve student outcomes in America’s school districts.

The conference brought together school board members and state-based affiliate groups from 39 states to discuss education policy.

Workman, one of four attendees chosen as a panelist at the conference, says the event brought together many perspectives, all with a common theme of improving student outcomes:

“The conference was a comprehensive, rigorous program to inform, equip and encourage board members from across the nation to govern their districts well.  The program was a line-up of thoughtfully-curated, cutting-edge topics presented by educators, administrators, and experts in public policy, education research, and law–all with a unifying focus to close achievement gaps and increase academic success for all students.

“I was honored to be selected as a panelist for the SBAE’s Success Across the Network discussion panel held the first day of the conference.  Each panelist shared personal experiences and practical advice to encourage other school board members to initiate change that leads to academic excellence.  The panelists discussed several topics, including screen time in the classroom, policy development, student safety and discipline, and board member collaboration.

“I am so appreciative of the opportunity to engage with professionals at the top of their field in order to better serve Lansing students.  I’d like to thank Lansing for sending me to the SBAE conference and I look forward to sharing what I learned with our community.

Staff from the Kansas School Board Resource Center also presented at the SBAE conference on its superintendent search service and SMART strategic planning.

Workman will discuss her conference experience further at USD 469’s next board meeting on July 13th.
