Unified School District 361 Chaparral has a new superintendent of schools, thanks in part to assistance from the Kansas School Board Resource Center.
According to a release from KSBRC, which — like The Sentinel — is owned by the Kansas Policy Institute, the district appointed Chris Whetzel to the position.
KSBRC and USD 361 worked as part of a strategic partnership in which KSBRC guided the district through “a comprehensive search process aligned with Chaparral’s values and academic goals.”
“Mr. Whetzel is known for his unwavering commitment to placing student outcomes as the highest priority. Those who have worked with him describe his approach as deeply rooted in listening and empowering leaders to grow. I am confident his leadership will build confidence and collaboration at every level as they move forward with their goal to instill a culture of continual improvement,” Dr. Tracy Frederick, Executive Director of KSBRC said. “The Chaparral Board has built a strong foundation for this search by engaging students, teachers, and community members in meaningful conversations about their expectations for students when they graduate. These discussions led to the development of clear and aspirational SMART goals focused on improving ELA and Math outcomes, ensuring that every Chaparral graduate is prepared for college or a career.”
Whetzel brings over 25 years of leadership experience in public education, having served as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, and district leader, as well as in the private sector. Prior to his appointment, he served as interim superintendent and worked as a leadership and development consultant for school boards across Kansas.
“Our community is excited to welcome Mr. Whetzel as our permanent superintendent”, Board President Jan Misak, said. “We understand we’re not just filling a position—we’re investing in the future of Chaparral students. We are confident that Mr. Whetzel’s enthusiasm and vision will inspire growth throughout our district. His student-centered leadership and focus on cultivating a thriving school culture make him the right person to guide us forward.”
USD 361 says KSBRC played a critical role
USD 361 Board Vice President Lindsay Zimmerman agreed.
“We were fortunate to have a number of strong applicants who care deeply about education and leadership”, Zimmerman said. “At this time, I believe Mr. Whetzel has the character, vision, and energy to lead Chaparral Schools forward. His well-rounded experience and genuine commitment to students, staff, and community will help strengthen the momentum already building for our district’s future.”
According to the release, KSBRC helps Kansas school boards find candidates who prioritize student achievement and foster long-term district improvement.
“The Kansas School Board Resource Center provided invaluable support throughout the entire process,” Misak said. “Their expert guidance played a key role in helping us identify top-quality candidates and in ensuring that our selection process remained rooted in integrity. Everything went smoothly thanks to their assistance.”
