“Kris Kobach, a strong and early supporter of mine, is running for Governor of the Great State of Kansas. He is a fantastic guy who loves his State and our Country – he will be a GREAT Governor and has my full & total Endorsement! Strong on Crime, Border & Military. VOTE TUESDAY!” President Donald Trump tweeted early Monday.
Although Trump’s endorsement will likely not change many votes–many Kansans have already voted–the president raised the stakes. He defied the media’s eagerness to gloat should Kobach lose in the Tuesday primary to Gov. Jeff Colyer.
True to form, the Kansas City Star interpreted Trump’s endorsement as ” a major slight to the state’s sitting governor.” It is no such thing. Trump has worked with Kobach closely on immigration and voter fraud initiatives. Should Gov. Colyer win the primary, Trump will almost surely endorse him for the general election in November.
If possible, Trump expanded the already huge media target on Kobach’s back. An article post earlier today on the Sentinel called attention to a Rolling Stone attack on Kobach as “Trump’s favorite mini-me.”
Wrote the Rolling Stone’s Bob Moser, fully in the throes of Kobach Derangement Syndrome, “The leading candidate in 2018 is a man whom every literate person in America recognizes as the second greatest political con artist of the 21st century: Kris Kobach, the country’s preeminent anti-immigrant profiteer and its most notorious election-fraud fraudster, a fellow who’s quite accurately and widely known among saner denizens of Kansas as having been ‘Trump before Trump was Trump.’”
If Kansans grew weary of nasty and unhinged national media attention during the Brownback era, they will reflect on those years as the halcyon days should Kobach win the primary. And should Kobach go on to win in November, CNN may have to move its headquarters to Topeka. It will be that crazy.
